Using a blockchain, Brazilian meat producers will soon be able to monitor how much or little they are contributing to the deforestation of the rainforest.
Fortunately, there are more and more approaches to use blockchain technology in sustainable contexts. One option is to track supply chains for specific products. But that’s not all: Now there is a message from Brazil, from the world’s largest meat packaging company JBS SAoriginates.
This has announced that it will put a stop to the deforestation of the rainforest using blockchain

On the company’s homepage you can read that it has undertaken several projects to protect the rainforest. This includes monitoring the entire supply chain of ranchers until 2025 via a blockchain-based platform called the “JBS Green Platform”. This platform should make it possible to compare the data about the company’s suppliers with data about livestock transports. JBS would like to extend the same socio-ecological criteria that it currently applies to its suppliers in the Amazon region to the other links in the production chain. The initiative will use the blockchain to get reliable and secure access to information about the suppliers.
In this case, the decentralized structure of the blockchain means that not only JBS receives this data. Suppliers and their subcontractors also have access. This means that they will be able to determine whether they are contributing directly or indirectly to the deforestation of the rainforest through their livestock.
The platform should go live by the end of the year
We are confident that our industry and all other major stakeholders will join us in this important endeavor. We believe that through cooperation, partnership and commitment we can succeed in bringing about a transformative change in the biome that will lead to increasingly sustainable production,

JBS aims to launch the blockchain platform by the end of this year. Then it will start analyzing the suppliers of direct suppliers in one state, Mato Grosso. It will then be extended to other states in the Amazon biome. The last phase includes the mandatory use of the Green Platform for all direct suppliers who want to sell cattle to JBS. The Brazilian government has received a lot of criticism for not doing enough about the deforestation of the rainforest. Nevertheless, there are already critical voices about the project. So asked Robert Muggah, co-founder of the think tank Igarapé Institute, according to media reportswhether all actors have the necessary technological skills at all.
