For several months now, Jim, or as he is more commonly known, Jay Tea of Wizbang fame has been helping me to secure some paperwork I need from the U.S.. I have sent Mr. Jim quite a few bucks via Paypal, and for a while he was trying his best to cut through the bureaucracy of the Costa Rican Consulate in the United States to help me. I always made sure Jim had MORE than enough money, and always asked him if he needed more. I wanted to make sure that he was not doing this for nothing, though most of what he was doing was a couple of phone calls and forwarding some paperwork and money orders for me. Of which I was willing to compensate him well.
Well, as some of you know, I have been traveling extensively the last couple of months, and could only keep in touch with Jay/Jim via Yahoo messenger and the occasional email. I frequently sent him additional funds, whether he asked for it or not, and was assured that he would take care of the paperwork for me. I even sent him my Birth Certificate.
I have been back in Costa Rica for a month now, and have sent Jay/Jim at least six emails, none have been responded to. Now since he and I have had what I considered to be something of a friendship over the last couple of years, I gave him the benefit of the doubt, assuming that either his spam filters were keeping out my emails, or that he was busy and could not answer right away. So I left him a message on Wizbang, where he is not so busy as to fail to postvoraciously...

"I think it offended some folks who felt that somehow diminished King's role in bringing about the Civil Rights Act," he told reporters on a conference call. "She is free to explain that, but the notion that somehow this is our doing is ludicrous."

My gut said that we would not go for Hillary Clinton. I thought we'd kick her sorry ass to the curb. But that vapid twit I met Saturday night apparently showed up with all her insipid little friends and voted with their... well, it wasn't their overly-perforated heads, that's all I'll say.
The vibe I got right up through the primary was that Obama would take it running away. But the morning of the primary, I heard one of those babbling idiots call in a local talk show and ask if it was true that Obama was a secret Muslim who took his Senate oath of office on a Koran and all that bullshit. The host immediately went to Snopes and read the entry, but somehow missed the "false" at the top and presented it as all true. I called in and howled in protest, and she did correct it after the commercial break.
But I think that the morons and assholes who are pushing these rumors did their damage here in New Hampshire. Of the four top Democrats, I thought we'd see through the guises of Hillary Clinton and John Edwards and send their asses packing. I figured Obama and Richardson would do better.

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said Friday that he misspoke when he said he spent as much time, if not more, at ground zero exposed to the same health risks as workers combing the site after the Sept. 11 attacks.
"I think I could have said it better," he told nationally syndicated radio host Mike Gallagher. "You know, what I was saying was, 'I'm there with you.'"
The former New York mayor upset some firefighters and police officers when he said Thursday in Cincinnati that he was at ground zero "as often, if not more, than most of the workers."
"I was there working with them. I was exposed to exactly the same things they were exposed to. So in that sense, I'm one of them," he told reporters at a Los Angeles Dodgers-Cincinnati Reds baseball game.
Fire and police officials responded angrily, saying Giuliani did not do the same work as those involved in the rescue, recovery and cleanup from the 2001 terrorist attacks, which left many workers sick and injured.
On Friday, Giuliani said he was trying to show his concern for the workers' health.
"What I was trying to say yesterday is that I empathize with them, because I feel like I have that same risk," he said.
"There were people there less than me, people on my staff, who already have had serious health consequences, and they weren't there as often as I was," Giuliani said, "but I wasn't trying to suggest a competition of any kind, which is the way it come across."
Giuliani's explanation further angered his ground zero critics, prompting several to issue a statement demanding an apology.
"He is such a liar, because the only time he was down there was for photo ops with celebrities, with politicians, with diplomats," said deputy fire chief Jimmy Riches, who spent months digging for his firefighter son.
"On 9/11 all he did was run. He got that soot on him, and I don't think he's taken a shower since."
Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, a union that fiercely opposes Giuliani, said he doubted Giuliani misspoke. "I think he was simply showing what his true character is - a self-absorbed, self-deluded promoter who got caught and is now just simply trying to backtrack," Schaitberger said.

For a while, I got really hung up in the political battle. I made somefriends, and made some enemies, but I had fun. My blogs popularity grew, I helped found a big bloggers alliance, and blog daddied a few progressive blogs. All in a Years work. But I never quite fell in with the Netroots crowd. Mostly a matter of choice, but also I suspect.... because a few of them were not quite ready to make room for another African American blogger to their little club.... Whatever...

There is some discussing going on in a group I belong to related to my fraternity. The discussion was a positive one, directed at some major reforms in the fraternity. A few days ago, a brother appeared and posted a resolution to ban Gays from the fraternity. Suddenly, all the discussion about reforms went out the window and the entire focus is now on Gays in the Frat. Much of what passes for discourse in the blogsphere these days is just like that thread... A bunch of people making hay about nothing. Was Marcotte out of line in her comments about the Catholic Church? I will leave that to catholics to decide, an organization of which I am not a member, though my wife and kids are. But I will say this, her comments were no better or worse than a lot of the drivel I hear from the Right on a daily basis. The funny thing is that they seem to feel free to attack anyone, and any religion, as it suits them, but have little tolerance for anyone who does not march in lockstep. They also have a tendency to put "Thoughts in people's heads." I already made my Obama post for today, so I will leave it to Maestro John Cole to speak for me....

Sacramento station KDND-FM has fired 10 staff members over Friday's competition, called "Hold your wee for a Wii," in which about 20 people tried to out-drink each other without going to the toilet to win a Nintendo Wii games console.
Jennifer Strange, 28, a mother of three, died from suspected water intoxication after coming second. She was reported to have drunk about seven quarts of water in a bid to win the Wii for her children.
After the contest she called in sick at work and was found dead at her home about five hours later.
The people behind Jennifers death should be in jail. If nothing else besides they are too fucking stupid to be loose in the world.

In October of 2005, I was in Guatemala working on a Project, when my wife had DirecTV installed in our home in Heredia. It was a huge mistake.
Any time it rains hard (something that happens frequently in Costa Rica), the signal is lost, sometimes for hours. There are no Network Channels (to speak of), from the U.S., which I rely on to keep me in touch with what's going on there. All irritants, considering I paid almost $70 a month for service. All of this I knew going into the contract.
When we canceled the contract in December, we were promised a full refund of our deposit, as soon as they picked up the equipment. They picked it up on December 14th, and charged us for the entire month of December. Since that time we have been in a weekly battle with them to return the $85 they owe us for the deposit. Every week we call, and every week the answer is "next week." Yesterday, my wife called for the third time, and was informed that the paperwork for our refund had never even been submitted, despite the fact that she had confirmed it a month ago, and we had to FAX the disconnect order.
Today I spoke with Andres Chaverry, who apologized and AGAIN promised the money for NEXT week. We have had DirecTV for over a year. Not once have we been late on payments. We have paid on more than one occasion for movies we did not order, we have constantly been bumped around by their horrible customer service, and my wife was tricked into signing a Year Long contract when we first signed up.... To be honest, we would have gotten rid of their service a long time ago if not for that.
My advice to anyone considering subscription TV in Costa Rica, DO NOT get DirecTV. They have the worst service in the country, this coming from someone who KNOWS service! And if you do get their service, don't expect them to honor their contractual obligation to return your money at the end of the Contract!

My favorites are the ones claiming to be from Dubai, from some helpless victim of throat cancer. I got one of those today. I wrote back telling the person to get the hell out of Du bai, since it is apparent that a highly infectious strain of throat cancer is going around there. (I of course told them that I get 20 such emails a week.) I love to waste their time. But in recent weeks, the site has posted some documents that weapons experts say are a danger themselves: detailed accounts of Iraq’s secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war. The documents, the experts say, constitute a basic guide to building an atom bomb.
Last night, the government shut down the Web site after The New York Times asked about complaints from weapons experts and arms-control officials. A spokesman for the director of national intelligence said access to the site had been suspended “pending a review to ensure its content is appropriate for public viewing.”
Officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency, fearing that the information could help states like Iran develop nuclear arms, had privately protested last week to the American ambassador to the agency, according to European diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the issue’s sensitivity. One diplomat said the agency’s technical experts “were shocked” at the public disclosures.
Early this morning, a spokesman for Gregory L. Schulte, the American ambassador, denied that anyone from the agency had approached Mr. Schulte about the Web site.
The documents, roughly a dozen in number, contain charts, diagrams, equations and lengthy narratives about bomb building that nuclear experts who have viewed them say go beyond what is available elsewhere on the Internet and in other public forums. With the public increasingly skeptical about the rationale and conduct of the war, the chairmen of the House and Senate intelligence committees argued that wide analysis and translation of the documents — most of them in Arabic — would reinvigorate the search for clues that Mr. Hussein had resumed his unconventional arms programs in the years before the invasion. "To suggest that Martin could identify with a party that affirms preemptive, predatory war, and whose religious partners hint that God affirms war and favors the rich at the expense of the poor, is to revile Martin," said the Rev. Joseph Lowery, the former president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which the slain civil rights leader helped establish.
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), who marched with King in the 1960s, called the ads an "insult to the legacy and the memory of Martin Luther King Jr." and "an affront to all that he stood for."
The spot, which ran for a time in the District, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania, will soon run again in those areas, as well as in Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Rice said.
The debate surrounding the ad is the latest skirmish in the ongoing battle over the King legacy. Foes of affirmative action, for example, often cite a line from King's "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963 in which he prayed that his children would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the "content of their character," an adoption that makes black liberals fume. But in the latest fight, civil rights veterans may be surprised to find that some black conservatives agree with them.
Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R), who is running for the U.S. Senate, denounced the King ad, and Donald E. Scoggins, president of Republicans for Black Empowerment and a former member of the association, said it was a terrible idea.
Black Republicans railed against the radio ads, with the sharpest criticism coming from former members of the black Republican association.
"The vast majority of black Republicans I know would not have approved of the ad," Scoggins said.
In the ad, a black woman says, "Dr. King was a real man," and a second one responds, "You know he was a Republican."

Isn't it enough to deny blacks the vote in Florida, and Ohio among other places? Now do you have to lie on top of that. Dr. King would likely have a lot of problems with the Democratic Party of 2006, but to imply that he was a Republican, or that he would support this administration... is an outrage! King was a man who would be outraged at the cost in human lives of the Iraq war. He was a man who would be outraged at the abandonment of human rights under the Bush Administration, and he was a man who would be sickened by the divisive and dirty politics of the regime in power. King was no Republican, and to imply that he was, or that he would support this administration, or Republican policy, is an insult to his legacy, and a betrayal of the African American people...
You know, I can read about this, and understand why so many decent conservatives are abandoning Bush these days:

Day-to-day life here for Iraqis is so far removed from the comfortable existence we live in the United States that it is almost literally unimaginable.

Or seeing your husband show up at the door covered in blood after he was kidnapped and beaten.
I don’t know a single family here that hasn’t had a relative, neighbor or friend die violently. In places where there’s been all-out fighting going on, I’ve interviewed parents who buried their dead child in the yard because it was too dangerous to go to the morgue.
Imagine the worst day you’ve ever had in your life, add a regular dose of terror and you’ll begin to get an idea of what it’s like every day for a lot of people here.
It kind of makes you sick, doesn't it? That some people are so wrapped up in continuing their political dynasty, that even in the face of stark reality, they can not bring themselves to admit error.

And indeed it was, but was it for the majority of Iraqi citizens. Did they live day to day in a terrordrome? I don't think so...
The evidence is clear, our adventure in Iraq... one based on false premises, has resulted in a tragedy of human suffering that surpasses anything that happened under Saddam, for the average Iraqi. And the fact that Right Wing political partisans continue deny this, is the second tragedy, as they have sold their souls for political expediency.
And it is ridiculous.

WASHINGTON (AP) - GOP leaders admit their offices have known for months that a Florida Republican congressman was sending inappropriate e-mails to a boy who had worked as a page in the House of Representatives.
The office of House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who earlier said he'd learned about the e-mails only last week, acknowledged that aides referred the matter to the authorities last fall. They said they were only told the messages were "over-friendly."
Rep. Thomas Reynolds, who heads the House Republican election effort, said Saturday he told Hastert months ago about concerns that a fellow Republican lawmaker, Rep. Mark Foley, had sent inappropriate messages to a teenage boy.
Reynolds, a Republican from New York, is defending himself from Democrats who say he did too little to protect the boy.
Foley quit Congress on Friday after ABC News questioned him about the e-mails to a former congressional page and about sexually suggestive instant messages to other pages.
"The improper communications between Congressman Mark Foley and former House Congressional pages is unacceptable and abhorrent. It is an obscene breach of trust," Hastert, R-Ill., Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Majority Whip Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said Saturday in a written statement.

Liberal bloggers in New Hampshire busted an aide to Rep. Charles Bass (R-N.H.) who was posing as a liberal blogger on such blogs as Blue Granite, NH-02 Progressive and others. Bass’ office admitted culpability to HOH and said the staffer would be “appropriately disciplined.”
The unnamed aide to Bass — who, like many others in his party, faces a tough re-election fight — was routinely trolling liberal New Hampshire political blogs calling himself “IndyNH” and more commonly IndieNH, pretending to be a progressive.
Finally, after noticing that lots of things he said just didn’t add up, a couple of the bloggers traced IndieNH’s IP address to the House of Representatives.
And they thought, “How many offices in the U.S. House would be interested in one race in New Hampshire?” The answer: Very few. Probably only one.
Laura Clawson, who runs the Blue Granite blog and writes as “Miss Laura,” told HOH that she and another blogger easily traced IndieNH’s IP address to the House server. They could even see the searches Mr. or Ms. IndieNH was doing to gather opposition research on Bass’ challenger, Paul Hodes (D), such as “Hodes and gay marriage” and “Hodes and taxes.”
The poseur had raised suspicions among liberal bloggers after he pooh-poohed a recent poll showing Bass tied with Hodes and suggested that Democrats should not waste any more time or money on the Hodes race and instead should invest their resources in other races.
“I am going to look at the competitive race list to figure out where to send another mydd.com/netroots donation and maybe help out in other ways,” IndieNH posted. “Maybe CT or NY for me — they are at least close by. Anyone interested in pooling NH efforts for some of those races? Maybe we could even go help out for a few days in buses or something in November?”
After Clawson posted a notice on her site informing IndieNH that he (or she — Clawson wasn’t sure) had been rooted out as a GOP aide in Bass’ office, the postings ceased.
The aide’s job could cease, too. John Billings, a spokesman for Bass, acknowledged that “we have questioned the staff and found that a staffer in this office did indeed post to some blogs under the pseudonym ‘IndieNH.’ There was no good reason for this, just a
serious lapse of judgment, and the staffer will be appropriately disciplined.”

According to the Iraqi government, 3,438 civilians were killed in July, making it the bloodiest month since the invasion. The president was asked yesterday whether the failure of the U.S.-backed "unity" government to stem the orgy of sectarian carnage disappoints him, and he said that no, it didn't. How, I wonder, is that possible? Does he believe it would be a sign of weakness to admit that the flowering of democracy in Iraq isn't going exactly as planned? Does he believe saying everything's just fine will make it so? Is he in denial? Or do 3,438 deaths really just roll off his back after he's had his workout and a nice bike ride?
I find it hard to be sarcastic in the face of the ongoing carnage in Iraq. But I do find it making me more and more angry. How is it that intelligent people on the Right, in all their "rah rah," support for Bush, did not see this coming. We on the left have been accused of Bush hatred for pointing out what has been obvious long before Bush occupied the White House. The man has very limited mental capacity. This war, and the resulting pandemonium in the Middle East, was foreseen by many. Those who were against the war, even experienced intelligence and military experts, were all painted as "Bush Haters." The fact that chaos is brewing in the Middle East, and that the entire region is less stable than before the war, is conveniently glossed over in the scare mongering over terrorism. We live in a far more dangerous world than before Bush took office. The big question is, is he capable of keeping us safe?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Parts of eastern United States prepared on Tuesday for a potentially deadly heatwave with the mercury forecast to top 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) but power grid operators assured demand could be met.
The heatwave is moving across the country from California, which has just suffered through more than two consecutive weeks of triple-digit temperatures that killed at least 126 people and caused power failures.
Meteorologists also forecast 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Detroit, St. Louis and Chicago on Tuesday and temperatures that would top 100 degrees in Philadelphia and Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The National Weather Service, or NWS, issued excessive heat warnings and said the heat index -- how hot it actually feels when the humidity is combined with the air temperature -- was due to hit 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 C) in New York on Wednesday.
"If people do not take precautions we could be looking at a significant number of fatalities," said NWS Warning Coordinator Meteorologist Gary Conte, adding that New York City had not suffered such a string of hot temperatures since July 1999.
"The forecasted temperatures and heat indices (in 1999) were pretty close to what we're looking at now. The impact from that event resulted in 43 deaths in New York City and New Jersey with rolling blackouts, buckled roads and so forth."

TMZ has also learned that the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department had the initial report doctored to keep the real story under wraps. TMZ has four pages of the original report prepared by the arresting officer in the case, L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy James Mee. According to the report, Gibson became agitated after he was stopped on Pacific Coast Highway and told he was to be detained for drunk driving Friday morning in Malibu. The actor began swearing uncontrollably. Gibson repeatedly said, "My life is f****d." Law enforcement sources say the deputy, worried that Gibson might become violent, told the actor that he was supposed to cuff him but would not, as long as Gibson cooperated. As the two stood next to the hood of the patrol car, the deputy asked Gibson to get inside. Deputy Mee then walked over to the passenger door and opened it. The report says Gibson then said, "I'm not going to get in your car," and bolted to his car. The deputy quickly subdued Gibson, cuffed him and put him inside the patrol car.
I am not naive enough to think that in a Hollywood that is driven by profits, that Gibson's career is over, but he may find his social life will take a big hit on this one.

Temperatures as high as 111°F (48°C) have hit the United States today, a continuation of Monday's triple-digit (Fahrenheit) record highs in some areas.
High energy costs have many elderly and low income citizens keeping the air conditioning off, fixed incomes being blamed in many cases. In response to this, cities such as Chicago and New York have turned some public facilities into “cooling areas” for the duration. Buildings being converted include homeless shelters, senior centers, libraries and shopping malls. State agencies are urging anyone experiencing heat related symptoms to get to one of these places as soon as possible.
Early reports are attributing at least three dead from heat related complications in Philadelphia, Arkansas, and Indiana
The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag warnings for six states, warning that the heat could easily lead to forest fires. Much of the northeast corridor and central plains states have been issued heat warnings.
Relief is in sight for the northeast, with storms bringing cooler weather from the Ohio Valley through New England; however the central part of the US won't see a break in the heat until the weekend.

The Aksa Martyrs Brigades announced on Sunday that its members have succeeded in manufacturing chemical and biological weapons.

Back in March, we noted how stories covering the death of a deaf girl who got hit by a train focused on the fact that she was text messaging when she was killed, rather than the other circumstances leading to her death. Now, in India, a 23-year-old woman has been killed in similar circumstances -- she was crossing a railroad track, talking on a cell phone, when she got struck by a train and killed. This, of course, becomes an article called "Cell phones can kill". The phone really had nothing to do with it, but rather a person who, for some reason, thought it would be a good idea to walk on or cross some train tracks while not paying any attention.
Sorry if I come off as a bit harsh, but I just think that some people are best left "technologyless."
As the above article points out, the people who died as a result of not paying attention to their surroundings, are not victims of technology. They are victims of their own carelessness.
Read the comments to this post. Notice how many people, after seeing overwhelming evidence that the so called Australian Lottery was a fraud, continued to practically BEG for help in "securing their winnings"?

Initial research by the U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg shows no Soldier with the name of Jesse Macbeth having ever been assigned to the Special Forces or the Army Rangers -- which are, in fact, two separate disciplines. This appears to be some sort of hoax. No Soldier by that name at Fort Lewis to our knowledge, in the past, either. Of course, the line about "go into the Army or go to jail" is vintage TV script not heard since the 1960s. There are also numerous wear and appearance issues with the Soldier's uniform -- a mix of foreign uniforms with the sleeves rolled up like a Marine and a badly floppy tan beret worn like a pastry chef. Of course, the allegations of war crimes are vague, as are the awards the Soldier allegedly received.

In my communist-dictated Spanish class the other day we watched a video regarding the "exploitation" of Honduran laborers (children, mothers, father... anyone) by American business interests. The point was that capitalism, more specifically globalization, is bad and that all Americans should boycott stores such as Gap, OshKosh, Wal*Mart, etc. I wasn't convinced. But, unfortunately, many of my fellow students were converted to join the Communist Manifesto in America. All at the will of my borderline psychotic profesora de espanol (boy do I hope she hasn't read this blog..).
First off, this documentary claimed that the socio-economic system of globalization creates a negative product at both ends; here in the U.S. and abroad in Honduras, China, wherever.. This is, in my opinion, pretty off key. Outsourcing of industry from the U.S. has benefits. The primary benefit being that inflation is contained very well. The things manufactured abroad; clothes, plastics, junk.. would be produced in the U.S. at outstanding prices. The pair of socks you wear right now, perhaps costing you a dollar, could well cost you over five if produced by laborers being paid even minimum wage, plus benefits, here in the U.S. Now, the documentary alleged that this would be set off, because there would be greater levels of employment here in the U.S. This, however, is completely false. The jobs brought here under an anti-globalization system would only pay minimum wage, seeing as these companies are already so scrapped for profit that they must pay lowly wages abroad. Under current conditions, people being paid minimum wage can hardly afford those one dollar pair of socks. How are they to afford merchandise at higher prices with the same pay? Where will they get the extra four dollars or so to buy those socks? They won't. An isolated, anti-globalization system is dangerous to the American economy. It hurts not only those on the top, but those on the bottom and in the middle. The documentary has taken the position that employment is more important to a stable economy than inflation. This is not the case. Inflation hurts and effects the entire economic structure, from top to bottom. Employment difficulties only effect those who are unemployed.
The industries leaving America, most notably outdated, industrial manufacturing, are of little importance to the American economy. The American economy has reached a level of sophistication in which these industries no longer play a vital role in our economic system. American education, innovation and capitalism provides for more advanced and innovative industries. Things like aerospace, engineering, advanced sciences, auto and computer manufacturing are more suited for the American economic landscape. Americans can make money doing these jobs, and those operating these industries can also make money. And we stand with little international competition in these areas. We can easily be outcompeted by China or South America in low-tech manufacturing. Therefore, why not let them do it?
Understandably, the documentary then continues to take the position that globalization and free trade agreements such as NAFTA and CAFTA have hurt those living in third world, underdeveloped countries. This may well be the case. However, it is simply not the problem of the government or people of the United States of America. People are not exploited for no reason. They are exploited because they are weak, lowly and defenseless. Why haven't these Hondurans grouped together and resisted the business interests which oppress them? So many nations have taken this initiative, from the United States itself to India, China, Poland etc. We could have been in the same position as Honduras, in constant exploitation by Great Britain. But we were better than that. We grouped together and resisted. I don't understand why Hondurans haven't done the same. Even into today's modern world this has been done. And most examples, Poland and India to be specific, have been peaceful in their resistance. And the nations exploiting these nations have survived. We could to. It is up to those being exploited by the US to take the initiative for change. We will work in our own national interests and these people should do the same. Although, I would strongly discourage them from taking any action, seeing as they keep vital necessities in my life low-cost...

The scope of this mess was shown this week at Samuel Alito's Supreme Court nomination hearings that the Republicans, as they are making apparent through their actions, didn't even want to give us the courtesy of holding for Bush's nominee. How else can one explain their reaction to Alito's wife, Martha Ann Bomgardner, crying at the hearings? From the Drudge Report to Fox News, who had the audacity to say "Will Vicious Dems pay for driving Alito's wife to tears?," the Republicans have shown not only that they aren't mature enough to allow simple questions to be aired, but they're more than willing to drag politics down to the level of a grade school recess fight; they even emulate a grade schooler by running home to Mommy after they start crying.
Republican Politics these days remind me of the school yard bully, especially when it comes to clowns like the "Ragin' Cajun." Rational discussion is out of the question. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Women's rights advocates who say Joe Paterno made outrageous remarks about an alleged sexual assault want the Penn State football coach to resign.
Joanne Tosti-Vasey, president of the National Organization for Women in Pennsylvania, said Paterno's comments last week represent an institutional insensitivity that endangers women. She issued a news release late Friday calling for Paterno's resignation.
"When someone of his stature makes light of sexual assault, we have a serious problem," Tosti-Vasey said. "It sends a message that this behavior is not serious ... that sexual assault or rape or violence against women is acceptable for an athlete."
The coach's remarks came a day before the Orange Bowl, when a reporter asked a question related to Florida State linebacker A.J. Nicholson. Nicholson was accused of sexual assault and sent home before Tuesday's game.
Paterno replied by talking about past suspensions of Penn State players, according to an official transcript from the Orange Bowl.
He then added: "There's some tough -- there's so many people gravitating to these kids. He may not have even known what he was getting into, Nicholson. They knock on the door; somebody may knock on the door; a cute girl knocks on the door. What do you do?"
"Geez. I hope -- thank God they don't knock on my door because I'd refer them to a couple of other rooms," Paterno continued. "But that's too bad. You hate to see that. I really do. New York transit is on strike. I won't be able to go to work today, like millions of others, who also won't be able to shop or go to restaurants. The city will lose hundreds of millions and untold millions will lose millions in turn. And what for?
Every indsutry in the U.S. economy has had to go through radical restructuring to find new efficiencies. But not government and civil service. And that is what this strike is about.
The transit union was demanding that its workers be able to retire at 55 on pension, and the city, which wanted to raise the age for new workers to 62, buckled last night. I don't have a pension, do you? I have a 401K, one for every employer in the last 20 years; I’m sure most of you are in similar boats. Retire at 55? Ha!
At the same time, the union has been insistent about maintaining artificial, wasteful, expensive manning levels...
...The union broke the law this morning, costing New Yorkers their own pay and businesses their business and the city its tax resources so that its members could keep pensions that most Americans don't have and retire sooner than most Americans could dream of doing and keep inefficient jobs for which there is no need.
As a kid I grew up with multiple transit strikes in Los Angeles. Bus Drivers seemed to go on strike about every five years, despite being some of the most highly paid people in Los Angeles (With overtime). Invariably, the people who suffered the most were the poor. Housekeepers and manual laborers lost jobs or walked miles to work. School Children lost school time, and businesses lost money, all so some over paid bus driver could keep ridiculous benefits.
Unions served a valuable purpose in the history of this country. Without them many of the rights workers take for granted would not exist, but in recent years they have lost credibility, effectiveness and jobs for their members. This strike is just another example of a Union disconnected from the reality of the economic times we live in. It is unfortunate that practicality prevents firing them all and replacing them with people who want to work...
DENVER, Colorado (AP) - Former FEMA Director Michael Brown, heavily criticized for his agency's slow response to Hurricane Katrina, is starting a disaster preparedness consulting firm to help clients avoid the sort of errors that cost him his job.
"If I can help people focus on preparedness, how to be better prepared in their homes and better prepared in their businesses -- because that goes straight to the bottom line -- then I hope I can help the country in some way," Brown told the Rocky Mountain News for its Thursday editions.
Brown said officials need to "take inventory" of what's going on in a disaster to be able to answer questions to avoid appearing unaware of how serious a situation is.
In the aftermath of the hurricane, critics complained about Brown's lack of formal emergency management experience and e-mails that later surfaced showed him as out of touch with the extent of the devastation.
Okay, this stuff on the coming evolutionary shift really is starting to have me a bit worried. We recently learned that scientists have recreated the 1918 "Spanish" influenza that killed millions.
But it gets worse. The recent articles on it (see below) led me to this story from late 2003.
Read it carefully and follow the logic: they were trying to modify a virus, a variant of smallpox that only infects mice, that could not be vaccinated against. They succeeded. The purpose was to devise a vaccine-proof virus, so they could learn how to kill such a virus. But it was also supposed to be a minor pathogen, typically causing sterility. Instead it was 100% fatal.
So with only minor alteration they created a virus that was 100% fatal and could not be inoculated against. In a lab in St. Louis. On a presumably smallish government grant.
I am all for scientific study, but as Dean says, how long before a Grad student can duplicate this stuff in a garage, and how long before the wrong people get ahold of it....

It has been a week since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, leveled New Orleans and left hundreds of thousands of Americans homeless. We saw the best of America during that time—millions of people stepped forward to offer help. Meanwhile, the Bush administration failed at their most important job: keeping America safe. The federal effort was too little, too late and it is now becoming obvious that hundreds or even thousands of people died as a result.
Then, starting Friday, in a Karl Rove-led campaign, the White House started to blame state and local officials and even the victims who were stranded without transportation when the Hurricane arrived. Sign our petition demanding that the Bush administration stop blaming victims, including state and local officials, and focus on helping them.

Saturday, Aug. 27: Gov. Blanco asks for federal state of emergency. A federal emergency is declared giving federal officials the authority to get involved.

Those are the facts. State and local officials BEGGED for help as people in their city suffered. The Bush administration didn't get the job done and when their failure became an embarrassment they attacked those asking for help.
The New York Times reported on Friday that Karl Rove and White House communications director Dan Bartlett "rolled out a plan...to contain the political damage from the administration's response to Hurricane Katrina." The core of the strategy is "to shift the blame away from the White House and toward officials of New Orleans and Louisiana."
This is the same pattern of smearing that the Bush political machine has used for a decade. John McCain and John Kerry had their war records smeared. The CIA cover of Ambassador Joseph Wilson's wife was blown after he criticized the Bush Iraq policy. Now, Hurricane victims are attacked when the Bush administration failed to do their duty to help them.
It isn't just the Bush administration. Republican Senator Rick Santorum blamed victims in a TV interview and House Speaker Dennis Hastert suggested New Orleans should not be rebuilt.
I don't have much to say about this. I mean expressions of outrage just seem to bounce off the walls these days. These people are truly disgusting in their ability to play politics with disaster, and to put it simply... LIE. That there are people out there who still, after all this, refuse to deal with the truth is Frankly MIND BOGGLING!

ZAHN: She adored her father, revered her mother. They nicknamed her Nippy and pampered her from the start. SOARIES: Cissy and John always wanted more for Whitney than to just be a singer. They wanted her to be educated, articulate. They wanted her to surround herself with good people. And so they were very protective of her. They really wanted to keep the brakes on her so that she did not become consumed by her own talents.
ZAHN: But Nippy was drawn to the spotlight. By 1981, the 18- year-old was modeling and auditioning for studios when cousin Dionne Warwick introduced her to the best ear in town.
MUSTO: Clive Davis is one of those music biz icons who creates talent, makes careers and can remake careers. And he had remade Dionne Warwick to be hot again. He'd remade Aretha Franklin to be relevant again. And when he set his sights on Whitney Houston, he knew that this was the next Dionne and Aretha combined.
ZAHN: Coming up, the making, the madness, the molding of a mega star.
CASTRO: Everybody knew that her first album would be huge. No one expected it to be this huge.
ZAHN: But later, drugs, demons: Bobby Brown speaks.

So I wake up this morning to various attacks from the right wing, including this brilliant ode to irrationality:
This person, whoever he is, is an idiot. Rather than reflect on the similarities of the argument for the incomprehensible illiteracy called "ebonics" and the arguments of decades past about the futility of trying to educate blacks, he attacks the man who dared to introduce such a "hateful" subject. But perhaps he's a racist himself. Being black, he'd be one of the "victimist" sort, but really, one collectivist perversion is quite as good as another.
First off, I have to admit, that I don't even know why I am justifying this post. As I said above. I agree that Ebonics is a STUPID idea. BUT, and this is a big but, Paul has absolutely NO Cred whatsoever with being concerned about the welfare of inner city of black youth. I challenge anyone to show me ONE piece that Paul has penned, that demonstrates such concern. Even this one is simply another attempt by him to attack Liberal ideas.
I found his post odious for a variety of reasons. As others have stated, he could have simply stated the facts in the case and made the point that this is a stupid idea. It was not necessary to resort to stereotypes and inflammatory comments like the "pick my cotton," line.

And let me add Yellow Elephant to this post, because my ignorant friend, you would be shitting your pants if you walked into a black area of any major city, and were pointed out as a person who wrote something like this. But that is the benefit to blogging anonymously on someone else's dime isn't it. You can say the most ignorant shit, and know that you wont be held accountable for it outside the echo chamber of your own little racist world.

So I wake up this morning to various attacks from the right wing, including this brilliant ode to irrationality:
This person, whoever he is, is an idiot. Rather than reflect on the similarities of the argument for the incomprehensible illiteracy called "ebonics" and the arguments of decades past about the futility of trying to educate blacks, he attacks the man who dared to introduce such a "hateful" subject. But perhaps he's a racist himself. Being black, he'd be one of the "victimist" sort, but really, one collectivist perversion is quite as good as another.
First off, I have to admit, that I don't even know why I am justifying this post. As I said above. I agree that Ebonics is a STUPID idea. BUT, and this is a big but, Paul has absolutely NO Cred whatsoever with being concerned about the welfare of inner city of black youth. I challenge anyone to show me ONE piece that Paul has penned, that demonstrates such concern. Even this one is simply another attempt by him to attack Liberal ideas.
I found his post odious for a variety of reasons. As others have stated, he could have simply stated the facts in the case and made the point that this is a stupid idea. It was not necessary to resort to stereotypes and inflammatory comments like the "pick my cotton," line.
I am not surprised at all, by the vicious response by conservatives to my post. Nor am I surprised by Marty's apologist stance for Paul's post. The fact is that the post was in very poor taste. For all the rabid dogs who posted insulting comments, they are like water off a ducks back. You have only exposed your own ignorance and racism.
I deleted a couple of comments, including one that suggested that my children would be perfect for picking cotton. Of course these comments came from cowards who would never use a real email address.
Thanks people for showing your true colors, and making my argument much better than I could...
Paul is a racist, he has demonstrated it in previous post on Wizbang, that were... Shall we say, not so blatant. But more significantly, he is a political hack who has ZERO concern for anything other than making a partisan point.
And to Marty, who just posted another comment on the subject. I am on the same Page too Marty, when it comes to Ebonics. I just don't think it is necessary or productive to use hateful satire to make the point.
What I find most interesting is that I have been called Nigger once in comments this morning, and had it suggested that my children be sent to the cotton fields. You as a fellow black man have found no offense in that. I guess to some conservatives, being conservative is much more important than being an American, or being sensitive to the racism of fellow conservatives.

Chris as for you... You and I are friends. We disagree on this issue, period. If you cant get over that, then pull me from RTR and adios. I am not looking for your approval, nor I imagine, you mine. David Scott Anderson deserves major kudos for his efforts to reach across the 'sphere. As documented here,
that doesn't happen much. The blogosphere is two separate parts. David
is really the ONLY guy on either side of the aisle (whatever his views,
whatever his opinions) who REGULARLY reaches out to bloggers on the
other side and tries to engage them civilly. Sure, sometimes
(frequently?) those efforts end up acrimoniously. But let's give credit
where credit is due. David has been THE ONLY political blogger to try
to engage the other side.
Stephen is a person I respect, and admire. He was in reality on of My Blogfathers, and he has guest blogged on ISOU. He is someone who's opinion matters to me.
I am tracking back to your post because I don't say things behind people's backs. And generaly speaking, I don't speak ill of anyone unless provoked.... In this case, I was.
And yes Goe not pet. David KNOW Beck, Beck too smart to have pet like Goe. Goe good Republican, Goe believe everything he told by Karl Rove, Goe good Party member. After reading this rousing endorsement, I of course had to rush right over to the Beer Hall.. Eh, I mean Town Hall, and read what La Shawn found so compelling. I was not dissapointed. Once again we are treated to a bit of revisionist history worthy of Goebbels.
And so it turns out that the two most famous investigative reporters of all time were a pair of stenographers for an FBI hack who was ratting out President Nixon for passing him over as director.
That corrupt cop, Mark Felt, should be named co-winner of the 1973 Pulitzer Prize given to The Washington Post. For it appears Felt swiped the research for the Post's Watergate stories from FBI files, while Woodward did rewrite and Bernstein was on the coffee-and-Danish run.
The Post was scooped on the outing of "Deep Throat" by Felt's family. Understandably. The Felts resent that Woodward and Bernstein got rich and famous, while 91-year-old Mark, who did the dirty work, is feeding pigeons at the nursing home. The Felts now want their cut of the swag. Deep Throat was right, "Follow the money!"
And so the great mystery, "Who was Deep Throat?" reaches its anticlimax. He turns out to be a toady who oversaw black bag jobs for J. Edgar, violated his oath and, out of malice and spite, leaked the fruits of an honest FBI investigation to the nest of Nixon-haters over on 15th Street, then lied about it for 30 years.
Why did Felt lie? Because Felt knew he had disgraced himself and dishonored everything an FBI agent should stand for. He didn't want his old comrades to know what a snake he had been. Linda Tripp, savaged by the same press lionizing Felt, at least had the moral courage to go public and take the heat when she blew the whistle on Bill Clinton.
But to Bob and Carl and Ben and Sally, Felt is a "hero," a real Medal of Freedom man. And to them, perhaps, he is. For in the 1970s, a hero was any turncoat who would sink teeth into a president who was ending with honor a war into which the Liberal Establishment had plunged this country, and then cut and run when the body bags started coming home and their Ivy League kids started calling them names.
Fascinating stuff. How a Criminal President who tried to usurp the Constitution of the United States, suddenly becomes the victim of a bitter and corrupt cop... And the bit about Peace with Honor? Wazzup with that. My Brother was in Vietnam, someone needs to talk with him, or maybe peep the old newsreels of that last Huey out of Saigon. Three of my oldest and dearest friends are Muslim. They are good, hardworking Americans who suffered as much as I did on 9/11, perhaps even more, because the people who committed that atrocity used their religion to justify it. I have spent years learning about their religion and even participating in some of their traditions, like breaking fast with them during Ramadan. They have supported me, been brothers to me, and treated my religion with the utmost respect. In many ways I see in them a discipline that is lacking in many so called Christians.
Now before you go calling me a terrorist supporter, know this... I personally think that Terrorist should be eradicated from the face of the earth, whether they Burn Crosses on people's lawns, or blow up buildings. I will also remind you that if you watched the news last week, the Serbians who murdered thousands of Muslim men women and children, and raped Muslim women, were Orthodox Christians. Lastly, I will remind you that it was your President, who apparently decided to pursue a vendetta in Iraq, instead of concentrating resources on killing or capturing the TRUE Islamafacist, Ossama Bin Laden.
So while you guys are falling all over yourselves excusing the desecration of the Holy Book of one of the world's great religions, which by the way is second only to Christianity in Size...understand this:
That desecration did the REAL Islamafacist a favor. It proved what ignorant, intolerant and racist people we are, just as you and Captain Ed, and all the rest continue to prove it with your justifications. And that Muslim family down the street, the one that believes in America and the decency of Americans, just took another major body blow...
Think about that for a bit... And then think about how much easier it is for someone to come along and convince their teenaged son or daughter that they are second class citizens in their own country, and that their God is not worthy of the same respect as the Christian or Jewish God.

Newshounds - Last night, anti-abortion extremist Neal Horsley was a guest on The Alan Colmes Show, a FOX News radio program. The topic was an interesting one - whether or not an internet service provider should allow Horsley to post the names of abortion doctors on his website. Horsley does that as a way of targeting them and one doctor has been killed. In the course of the interview, however, Colmes asked Horsley about his background, including a statement that he had admitted to engaging in homosexual and bestiality sex.
At first, Horsley laughed and said, "Just because it's printed in the media, people jump to believe it."
"Is it true?" Colmes asked.
"Hey, Alan, if you want to accuse me of having sex when I was a fool, I did everything that crossed my mind that looked like I..."

members. Church members were told that if they voted for John Kerry

This is the sickest display of bastardized doctrine that I have seen
