My Son's Day in the Big "Ligs"

It was a beautiful day in Costa Rica today, and my son made his debut playing goalie for the Heredia branch of the Jr. Liga Football program. The son was shining, but it wasn't too hot, and the Soccer Moms and Dads were out in force. The picture above was taken when we arrived at the stadium and before the people started filling in.
One of the cutest things was watching all the little kids play. This squad was made up of about 25, 5? Year Olds (I am guessing on the age), and it was a hoot watching them converge on the ball like one huge wave. That is, the ones among them who didn't just get distracted and stare off into space, or scan the stands looking for their mothers.
There were also quite a few little girls playing on most of the teams. I cant wait to see Apollonia out there on the field. She is already a huge soccer fan, and roots for her big brother.
In fact one of the first words she learned to speak was, "GOOOOOOOOAL!"

In this sequence you can see her enthusiastically rooting for Jean as he appeared as Goalie.
This picture, (Jean is on the ground) is indicative of the kind of day the kid had today. He team was literally destroyed by the home Team 13-1, and Jean suffered the indignity of having 4 goals scored against him. Which is bad, but not that bad considering the starting goalie had 9 scored on him and literally begged to be taken out at the end of the first half. The poor kid was shell shocked.
My son plays for the Heredia branch of Liga, but the professional team is located in Alajuella, and the team that wiped the floor with my kids team today are from Alajuella, so they were the home team.
They played like it too. It is obvious the kids from Alajuella get a little more attention from the pro team, as they play and practice in Alajuella. Jean's team had horrible defense and poor ball handling, and the kids from Alajuella exploited both weaknesses with impunity.
Jean spent most of his time on the field nearly alone at his end, as
his team mates were generally out hustled, out played and out ran.
I was nevertheless proud of the kid. Putting him in this program was good for him. I think it is teaching him some things about discipline and team play.
I have seen Jean play twice now, and I still think he makes a better forward, than goalie. But he complains that when he is playing forward, that his team mates don't pass the ball enough. That deficiency was obvious today, as one or two players seemed to hog the ball, and it only got worse as they got further behind, and the prima donna's tried to make things happen on their own, instead of settling down and playing a team game.
I had a blast today, even though it meant getting up at 5am to drive to the stadium in Alajuella at 6:15. Sorry I dont have pictures of the "Soccer Moms," Boyd, but the wife was with me, and she got pissed at me looking. I can only imagine how pissed she would have been if I had trained my camera anywhere OFF the field.

End to a long and frustrating day!

Things I miss about the US
First on my list is FOOD!
I envy my buddy Tony Pierce, who lives in Los Angeles, and ENJOYS it. The man gets to eat at Johnny's Pastrami and Pinks Hot Dogs whenever he damned well pleases, and get's to hang out with celebrities and shit.
Now, when I lived in Los Angeles, I was a prince of the city. I drove a Ford Expedition, partied all night, lived La Vida Loca, and still made money...
And there is no DOUBT that if I lived in Los Angeles today, I would be living the Entourage lifestyle with my favorite nephew.
The Grub in Costa Rica is not bad mind you. As you can see from this plate I am eating, the eatin' can be good. But damn I miss my Pastrami sandwiches, burgers and dogs.
You can find a good hamburger here at the Hotel Del Rey, See my Single Man's Guide to Costa Rica for details on that one, but finding a decent Pastrami sandwich is impossible, as is a good hot dog.
I have considered more than once, opening an American fast food joint here. Not a McDonalds or one of those franchise places, but something like your good old fashioned LA Taco Stand. A place where you can load up on greasy American style burritos, burgers (swamped with chili), hot dogs and hell yeah steamed Pastrami on a hard roll with jalapeno peppers and pickles on the side.
Damn I am getting hungry just thinking about it!

24
If anyone was wondering where I was yesterday, I was watching a Marathon of Fox's 24. I have never gotten into the show before, but believe it or not, I sat through an entire season, with a 3 hour break to sleep. I saw the entire Season 4, non stop, and I have to admit, I am now officially a 24 addict. What a tremendous show. We are 13 weeks behind the U.S. here in Latin America (I imagine for translation purposes), but I dont care. I will be in front of my TV from now on every Monday night.

My name is David...
And I am a Malladict.
I spent the afternoon at the Mall with Apollonia and the wife and I tell you I would be in trouble if I were a single man. The women of Costa Rica are just too damned sexy. Old, young or in between, they are just sexy.
I have come to the conclussion, and when my buddy Boyd comes down we will perform a more scientific analysis. You probably think that girls like this one,

Are only seen on the pages of Tia Zelmira.... Ah, but not true. A trip to any Mall on the weekend will show you that Costa Rica is populated by women such as this. My own theory is that is is the healthy diet, weather and choice of clothing.... But I will wait until Boyd arrives, hopefully with a digital camera and proper scientific instruments to make a proper analysis. Hehe..

Boogie Nights
I cant believe how good this movie was. Tonight I caught Boogie Nights on Cable.
Awesome picture, great music... Man does it bring back some memories for a kid who grew up in the 70's.
I grew up in Los Angeles during the so called Golden Age of Porno, when porn had story lines, and some of the locales were actually recognizable to those of us who lived in New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco. It was a time when there were actually porn stars who could act, and who were beautiful, and when some films actually recieved critical acclaim. The Devil in Miss Jones, remains in my mind one of the first films to combine a first class psychological drama with incredible sensuality.
Anyway, Boogie Nights captures the mood of that time perfectly. The music, the parties, the style... Yeah, memories....

No more Pansy Football!
In a gritty new video game about a fictional football league, players cripple their opponents, gamble and use performance-enhancing supplements.
"Blitz: The League" is able to feature the graphic violence and adult themes not usually seen in sports video games because it was produced without an NFL license and the restrictions that carries.
Developed by Chicago's Midway Games, "Blitz" is the first unlicensed football title to hit store shelves since the NFL reach an exclusive agreement a year ago with Electronic Arts Inc., makers of the popular "Madden NFL" franchise. "Madden NFL" and the company's edgier "NFL Street" series are both rated E for everyone.
"We decided that we wanted to make this a mature-rated game for adults, and that opened up a whole lot of doors," said Mark Bilder, executive producer for "Blitz."
Because the game is unlicensed, it can't feature markings of real teams, NFL stadiums or images of NFL players. The star of this title is New York Nightmare linebacker Quentin Sands, a fictional player voiced by former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor.
Now THAT'S what I'm Talkin' About!
I want a copy! Late Christmas present anyone?

Just found this at Boyd's place.
Here's the question: If you could have dinner with any three people you want, who would they be and what would you have for dinner? One deceased guest (presumably brought back to life for your meal) is allowed.
Simple Answer:
My mother, who is dead, and her namesake Elsie, and my wife. I would cook fried fish and shrimps, becuase they were my mother's favorites, along with having my wife prepare some Costa Rican dishes. I wish I could invite all the kids, because I know my Mom would enjoy meeting her grandkids. Especially Elsie and Apollonia.

She would get a big kick out of the fact that I named my first daughter after her, and a bigger kick out of how smart my girls are. She would also love trying to communicate with Maribell. I am sure they would do fine.
Who would you invite, and why?

Thursday!
One of the things I love about living in Costa Rica, is th great selection of obscure movies they show on cable here. Last night at like one in the morning, they show this flick, Thursday. For those of you who like Tarantino movies like Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, this movie will be right up your alley. Lots of violence, humor and Paulina Porizkova! You can't ask for much more than that. There is a scene where she rapes the male protagonist of the movie at gunpoint. It is so over the top it had me blushing. This woman gives the term, sex appeal, an entire new meaning.
And what's up with Thomas Jane, doesn't he look just like Christopher Lambert?
I got a copy of The Punisher, the other night. The Punisher is another great Action Movie. I was struck by how much Jane looks like Lambert.
The great thing about Thursday is the ensemble cast. Hell, Mickey Rourke even makes an appearance. Speaking of Mickey, another wild movie I saw recently on the same cable channel was, Spun, this wild druggie movie staring Rourke as an Amphetamine cooker. I think you almost need to be on drugs to watch that one. It is like a car wreck that you just cant stop rubbernecking on. Hehe..
Rourke used to be one of my favorite actors, going back to, Year of the Dragon. Based on his IMDB record, he seems to have consistently worked, but the guy has never reached the potential you would have thought he had based on Year of the Dragon, and 9 1/2 weeks.
Anyway, I am still swamped with work, and I appreciate Michael and Beck putting up a couple of posts for me while I am busy. But I just had to share this with you. If anyone has seen Thursday, drop a comment on me and let me know what you think.

Musical Reccomendation
I was in a bar the other night hanging out with some friends when I heard a song I had not heard for a few years. It was made by a European Duo called Amistades Peligrosas.
I remember the first time I ever hear them was when I lived in Costa Rica about 12 years ago. When I found their disc in a music store I was struck by what an incredibly sexy couple they made.
Their music is in Spanish, but it is the kind of stuff that even if you dont speak or understand the language, you will love the sensuality of it. If you can find an MP3 of Me Quedare Solo, give it a listen. Their sound often reminds me of Enigma.
You can hear samples of a couple of their tracks here.

Update
I am still in Monteverde. We are waiting to complete some final installation issues here and train the staff, and then it is back home for me. It has been raining cats and dogs for days now, usually in the afternoon, and we have been occupied killing bugs and tweaking the system.
If you ever get to Costa Rica, you have to stay at this place, it is super cool.
There were a group of English Students staying here for the last week or so. They have been planning to leave for the last week, and finaly did this morning, after three abortive attempts.

They stayed next door to my room, were a blast. I swear one of them could have passed for Hugh Grant's younger brother.
The place is just killer fun all arround. Last week there was a group of students in from Ohio...

This lovely young lady is studying hospitality management, and was the life of the party. The interesting thing about the hotel is always full of people partying, chilling and having a good time.
