Empire's Workshop
Jan. 8 - What to do about the deepening quagmire of Iraq? The Pentagon’s latest approach is being called "the Salvador option"—and the fact that it is being discussed at all is a measure of just how worried Donald Rumsfeld really is. "What everyone agrees is that we can’t just go on as we are," one senior military officer told NEWSWEEK. "We have to find a way to take the offensive against the insurgents. Right now, we are playing defense. And we are losing." Last November’s operation in Fallujah, most analysts agree, succeeded less in breaking "the back" of the insurgency - as Marine Gen. John Sattler optimistically declared at the time - than in spreading it out. Empire's Workshop is an incredible piece of historical reporting and analysis, tying together the players and philosophies that have driven America's political ambitions for the last 50 years or more. It makes an incredibly compelling read. Disclosure: I was given a complimentary copy of the book by the publisher. June 18, 2006
Lapdogs... My two cents...
Two great commentaries on Eric Boehlerts', Lapdogs, on C&L and FDL. I got this book a couple of weeks ago for review and just finished it. It's a MUST Read, and pretty much trashes the bullshit about a Liberal Media bias. I am reading Helen Thomas', Watchdogs of Democracy, as well, and it is shaping up to be an equally strong expose on the failings of the press in the age of "Roveism." Both of these books are going to be passed on as soon as I have read them... The highest compliment I can pay to a book. |
