You don't see the difference in magnitude in protesting CBS and threatening to boycott the movie's sponsors, and the top-ranking Democrats in the Senate threatening to pull ABC's broadcasting license? To me, it's the difference between consumers deciding to use their limited economic power to express their outrage, and out-and-out government coercion and censorship? Let's not forget that the Democrats are trying to retake both houses this November, and the direct signatories of that letter will end up holding the reins in Congress if they succeed. If you can find Republican congressional leaders or Bush administration officials threatening CBS' very existence over the Reagan film, I'll gladly retract and apologize. But I think you'll come up empty. J. Posted by: Jay Tea Exactly, Jay Tea. Any comments on the left's hypocracy on this one David? Hmmm? Posted by: Marty at September 12, 2006 03:20 PM Not really, I remember it very differently, and I do recall Republican politicians being incenced, as well. Unfortunately, as is probably obvious right now with what I am posting, I am way too busy to go on a link hunt. Sorry guys not a cop out, just reality. Posted by: David Scott Anderson Yeah, Republican politicians were incensed. But there were some major differences. For one, Reagan was being attacked as a person when he was literally on death's door and utterly unable to defend himself. Clinton is hale and hearty, and proved it by siccing his lawyers on ABC. And those incensed Republican politicians never threatened (to my best recollection) to use the power of the federal government to ply CBS to their will. Again, the greatest threat was to boycott the sponsors of the program, and those threats never really amount to much. They certainly don't rise to the level of endangering the network's very existence, like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi's letter did. J. Posted by: Jay Tea Post a comment
