Ecuador comfortably beat Group A rivals Costa Rica 3-0 to qualify for the second phase of the World Cup for the first time in their history.

Carlos Tenorio opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Agustin Delgado added his team's second shortly after the re-start.Substitute Ivan Kaviedes wrapped up a wonderful afternoon for Ecuador as he struck his team's third in injury time to send their supporters at the Hamburg Arena into raptures.Ecuador, who are competing in their second World Cup finals, dominated the opening half against a toothless Costa Rica, who offered little opposition.Los Ticos did show some signs of revival after the re-start but their attempts to salvage their tournament hopes were shattered with Delgado's 54th-minute goal.

I think most Ticos will admit that they had little hopes for this team against all star international competition, but hope lived in the hearts of most, until today's elimination.

I did not see the game. It was on too early here and I had a late night last night, but to La Sele, (Slang for the National Team), I say, hold your heads high. You did your best, represented your country well, and bought gazzillions of dollars of free publicity for the country.
