Symbolism and Pandering
The new English is the National Language bill passed last night by the Senate, is just another example of our Government wasting our money, and their time... The bill appears to be nothing but symbolism and pandering by the Republican controlled Senate to their conservative base, while doing little to actually do anything. I have mixed emotions about the whole English as the official language thing. I live in a Country where Spanish is the language. EVERYTHING is in Spanish and NO effort is made by the government to accomodate non-spanish speakers. In recent weeks I have spent a fortune certifying and having "officially translated," certain documents my son needs for his schooling. Unlike many Americans, I made an effort to learn Spanish when I came here to live, and I don't complain about the need to understand the language in order to do business or live. I have little sympathy for those who come to the United States and expect to have services in their native tongue. Services should be provided, but at a fee like in most other countries. I also believe STRONGLY that immigrants MUST learn English, especially as part of a residency or citizenship requirement. Posted by David A at May 19, 2006 02:02 PM

David I'm not sure if the bill should be dismissed as "symbolism" because almost any talk in the past that has even attempted to officially recognize English has been thoroughly shouted down and dismissed as "racist." No amount of sober discussion of how proficiency in English translating into success in American business and culture was brooked. For the last several decades the ascendency of "multi-culturalism" has held sway in public schooling, academia, universities, major media and government. We have been told we must treat all "cultures" equally and that Americans that speak only English are snobby, racist, colonialists. I live in Southern California where we have immigrants in large numbers from all over the world. Russian, Armenian, Iranian, Vietnamese, Tongan, Samoan, et al. Yet, it is our Spanish speaking population that got "bi-lingual" education in public schools... and were promptly kept in second-class citizenship due to their inability to mainstream into English. But any attempt (until recently) to mandate English-only instruction was met with a two-pronged argument ... the racist one, of course, and the other is that NO LAW made English "official" so all languages should be "equal" in America. Pushing English as the official language should be on the right step to counter these arguments and make assimilation into American culture the expected norm for immigrants.
