Immigration!

Not that you give a rats ass about my opinion Ezra... But I have to agree with Oliver on this one. Try moving to Costa Rica. I am married to a Costa Rican, have three half Costa Rican children, am considered one of the "fathers," of the Costa Rican high technology industry, run a successful and popular company that contributes to the community...and it is costing me a fortune, not to mention countless hours of time to make sure my status is 100% legal.

I understand your points about the logistics of dealing with an out of control immigration system. But because a law is difficult to enforce, do we ignore that law. Having lived in several countries, I am very familiar with how other nations handle immigration issues.

I have been illegal in Costa Rica for a time. Though in my case it was more a matter of paperwork and Costa Rica's slow moving system... than any illegal intention on my part. Violating our laws can not be justified under any circumstances. But in my opinion, it is not so much about punishing the immigrants, as it is sanctioning the governments, especially the Mexican government, that turns a blind eye, and even encourages it. President Fox has thumbed his nose at the American people and our laws on more than one occassion. Time for some tough talk there...

Certainly President Fox has to take a lion's share of the blame for the state of his country's economy, but, since I'm such an America hating liberal, I also have to wonder about the United State's role in devaluing the Mexican economy, thus marshalling in a desperate climate that causes Mexicans to such for a decent paycheck elsewhere since they can't get one in their home country. After all, Mexico is one of the places that American employers "downsize" jobs to wheen they want cheap labor; couple that with Mexican farmers being forced to compete with America's government-subidized farmers ... It doesn't seem like we're helping Mexico's economic condition. Instead, we're living off the backs of their cheap labor eensuring that cheap goods continue to flood the shelves at our Wal-Marts.

Part of me wants to be against illegal immigration, but... I mean, what do we expect? People want to make a decent paycheck to provide for themselves and their families. If their own country can't provide them with jobs that pay decently, then I have to see that as the root of the problem and the illegal immigrants, in this case, as victims.

The anti-immigration attitude that some Americans have just pisses me off. They act like Mexicans and other minorities are coming up to El Notre and purposely taking over our jobs as the first step into maliciously ruining this whole country. Uhm, these people just want to make a decent paycheck...

Tas:

Making Mexico dependent on remittances sent from illegal aliens in our country hurts both countries. For instance, those companies that profit off such indirectly illegal activity then donate to politicians that do what they want: look the other way. What word do we normally associate with procedure?

Western Union makes a lot of money off sending remittances, and they've actively opposed Tom Tancredo because he wants to do something about illegal immigration.

I'd suggest thinking about this whole subject in a bit more depth and not buying the emotional arguments cynically offered by those who profit off illegal immigration.

You ever seen an illegal's paycheck Bro? It is far from decent.

I have no doubt that an illegal's pay is far from decent; that's the only reason why employers hire them and allow them to work here. They want to pay illegals shit. But, across the border, that money they make here is worth a lot more to their families.

Anyways, I guess all that I'm saying is that I don't want to demonize illegal aliens. At the same time, the issue of immigration is really just complicated... It has ties to everything. Do we allow illegals to be granted amnesty? Is Bush playing politics with granting them amnesty, looking the shore up a hispanic political base? Why aren't the employers who hire illegals being equally as demonized or threatened with legislation? (Hell, to be fair, if an illegal gets deported, why not deport their boss, too? It's their boss's fault that the illegal is here.) If we kick illegals out, how high will prices go? And isn't it hypocritcal for some Wal-Mart shopping Republicans (and, yes, Democrats) to call for deportation while enjoying the rewards that illegal immigration brings to consumers (ie: cheap prices)?
