Three views of the same cartoon

AMERICAblog is outraged that the Pentagon is trying to censor cartoonist. Michelle is outraged at the cartoon itself, so is John. Where do I fall... This time I have to agree with the folks on the right. The Cartoon sucks, crosses the line and is just plain tacky.

I don't think the cartoon is supposed to be funny. It's supposed to be visceral --which it is.

I think it makes a point and one that a lot of people are not comfortable with.

Now ya'll know me, and I am as Anti War, anti abuse to the troops as ANYONE, but that was a point that could have been made a lot differently. I thought it was extremely tacky.

I think the point it made was tacky, but of course we won't hear any outrage about that.

Posted by: Angel at February 2, 2006 01:17 PM

I agree but that point is being made daily with facts.

Some people make the mistake of thinking that all cartoons should produce a chuckle. As Roxanne points out,the aim of some cartoons is to gut or cut to the bone. The point may be being made daily with facts, but people are becoming numb to the facts. The cartoon may be in poor taste, but sometimes it is necessary to slap someone upside the head with a tasteless cartoon to wake them up again to the facts. Some people don't want to address those issues, though, no matter how often or in what manner the facts are presented.

David--

What do you think of this photograph?

Posted by: Roxanne at February 2, 2006 05:03 PM

Hehe, Rox, kind of a loaded question. The answer is it represented the real horrors of the Vietnam War. Now if we were discussing some of the pictures of maimed soldiers coming back from George's war, or even the heartbreaking picture of that little girl covered in blood after US soldiers accidently killed her whole family at a Roadblock, I would be all for it. In fact, I published the picture, but this cartoon bothered me, because it did seem to make light of a serious issue, and one that I have written about often including this week, that of how our troops are NOT supported in anything more than words by the government and most of the Right Wing chest beaters.
