The Classic!
Here in Costa Rica, they call the two or three (or four) times a year, that La Liga and Saprissa, (The two most popular soccer teams in Costa Rica) play; "El Classico." The Classic.... I have tried to explain to my Costa Rican friends that two teams who play several times a year, do not make, "A Classic". I invited my best Tico friend to watch yesterday's USC/Notre Dame game. The game lived up to the hype.
I watched the game at the Colonial, one of Costa Rica's big sports books, with about 100 mostly americans. I was surrounded by Notre Dame fans, which made the last few minutes of the game rather tense. It looked shaky up until the final seconds, but the Trojans are champions, and in the end they played like it. There were the Green Jerseys, the screaming fans, and the mystical traditions of Notre Dame to deal with. There was also adversity, dropped balls, penalties and questionable calls, but the cool confidence of a championship team won out in the end.... The way they played yesterday, I have no doubt that my beloved Trojans are on the way to another National Title. Posted by David A at October 16, 2005 12:12 PM
