Republicans on Offensive in Defense of Rove
"The emerging GOP strategy -- devised by Mehlman and other Rove loyalists outside of the White House -- is to try to undermine those Democrats calling for Rove's ouster, play down Rove's role and wait for President Bush's forthcoming Supreme Court selection to drown out the controversy, according to several high-level Republicans." How any American, even Conservatives who supported and voted for this administration, can stomach this kind of lack of respect for the American People, is just incredible to me. Mehlman, who said he talked with Rove several times in recent days, instructed (italics mine) GOP legislators, lobbyists and state officials to accuse Democrats of dirty politics and argue Rove was guilty of nothing more than discouraging a reporter from writing an inaccurate story, according to RNC talking points circulated yesterday. I don't think the American people are going to be so easilly distracted this time. Trackback Pings

That's exactly what this whole "leak" story is - yet another Rove distraction. Karl Rove is far too smart and manipulative to put his head on the chopping block if there's even a remote chance it'll be cut off. Falling on his own sword? I don't think so...Long before the beginning of this investigation, Rove knew he was in the clear, but correctly assumed that the press and the public would jump on it. There has been an investigation going on for more than two years into this matter and it's supposed to be coincidental that just as the heat was getting turned up on the Downing Street Memos, Rove offers himself up as a sacrificial lamb? Not on your life. This whole mess was planned and executed according to strict Rovian principles. This story will drag on until the Supreme Court nominations emerge and then all will be forgotten. Most IMPORTANTLY, the Downing Street Memos. That is the story that is going to unravel Rove's empire, and is the common thread between all of these issues. If the blogosphere cannot force the MSM to get back to the real story, it'll all go away. There is a reason Karl Rove's nickname is "Turd Blossom." Posted by: Aspen7698 at July 17, 2005 06:11 PM Your logic makes a lot of sense except for one thing... I dont think even Rove is so smart that he would have done this dirt two years ago, in anticipation of having a "distraction," in his pocket for Downing Street. But you are right, we need to be able to fight the war on two fronts, and we have pulled too many troops of of DSM for this battle. Posted by: David Anderson at July 17, 2005 06:38 PM I don't think the leak was "planned" to be used as a diversion. I think it happened as pure retaliation against Wilson. I do however think Rove capitalized on it, as he does everything, and now he's getting the results he was looking for. I'll bet he and the administration (well except for Scott McClellan) are just giddy with glee that the misdirection worked yet again. Posted by: Aspen7698 at July 17, 2005 07:06 PM I'm getting very irritated over this. Everybody keeps getting the Republican talking points except us conservative bloggers... and so we are forced to do things the old-fashioned way, by reading accounts closely, examining the context and reliability of sources, and using whatever technical expertise we have. See, if I had the talking points, I wouldn't have to waste my time proving that Democrats such as disgraced former House Speaker Jim Wright were lying about this case, or evaluating Clifford May's evidence showing that The Nation's David Corn was the one who "outed" Plame as a former NOC. If I had the talking points, I wouldn't have to reply on Plame's former supervisor, who said Plame hadn't been a NOC for years. Damn them for making my writing so hard by making me report the facts, when instead I could rely on talking points. Damn them all. Posted by: Confederate Yankee at July 17, 2005 09:56 PM Yeah its a damned shame Johnny Reb that they dont have your smarts. If they did, I am sure this whole thing would just go away. Why dont you send Rove your resume. I mean with your wit, charm and whatnot, I am sure Ole Karl could use a good ole boy like you. Cause we all know Mehlman's comments to the NAACP the other day about Southern Strategies were just bullshit, right? (wink). Posted by: David Anderson at July 17, 2005 10:11 PM David, I'm shocked. You didn't know Democrats had a southern strategy as well? Oddly enough, for some reason, those white sheets just aren't as effective as they once were. Enjoy what remains of "Nadagate." I know I will. Posted by: Confederate Yankee at July 18, 2005 12:18 AM Yeah, only thing is MOST of those Democrats are now Republicans, I'm shocked you didnt know that Johnny Reb. Well with some exceptions, Zell Miller for example. But then he is a psycho so I guess he doesnt count. Nadagate? Aw how cute... I am in Costa Rica, a Spanish speaking country, so you seek to impress by sprinkling a little spanish in there. How quaint Johnny! I just love you rednecks. There is something to be said for years of inbreeding creating such a quaint and interesting group of people. Posted by: David Anderson at July 18, 2005 09:56 AM Yank, the only problem with your assessment that this will ultimately be called "Nadagate", is if that were true, there would be no ongoing investigation. If Plame did not have NOC status, if Rove didn't lie about it, if no crime were committed, this would already be over and done with. Fitzgerald quite obviously feels otherwise as there is no sign this investigation is wrapping up. Posted by: aspen7698 at July 18, 2005 11:25 AM Post a comment
