NAACP Calling for Reparations?

According to this article, that is the case. Rob wrote a long article on the subject at Wizbang.

For the most part, I agree with his assessment that this is folly, though I see no problem with some of the major corporations implicated in the various historical studies, donating money for scholarships and community development.

While I think this comment by Rob:

"If these folks at the NAACP are truly interested in lifting their people from the hole slavery has put them in then I suggest that they stop living in the past and start living in the present, where some focus on education and family values would go a long way toward helping the situation today's blacks are in."

Would be taken as insulting by some Black Folks, who believe that only by acknowledging the past, can we move forward into a brighter future. I don't think Rob meant any harm in the comment. It simply indicates an ignorance on his part. Family values do not put food on the table, and education means spending money to upgrade inner city schools, something Conservatives have been reluctant to do.

The solution to the ills of the Black Community will not be resolved by rhetoric, on either side. Nor will they be solved by pouring money into programs administered by organizations like the NAACP.

I don't pretend to have all the answers, but I do believe that the most important steps for us to take is to first acknowledge that racism and its continuing effects are NOT things of the past. Addressing the effects of racism means dealing with the issue honestly, and looking at creative ways to address these ills. I do think investment in the Black Community is a key. Investing in education and in jobs creation are keys to creating an environment condussive to growth.

I also think successful blacks need to do more. I have no problem with the gist of Bill Cosby's arguments about priorities in the Black Community, but I wish Cosby and others would focus more on solutions. Magic Johnson, the famous NBA Star has put his money where his mouth is. His non profit organization and various business development efforts have contributed greatly to the inner city, and to providing hope. His efforts are a model for what I believe needs to happen in the Black Community.
