Eh... I don't get this?
I get a trackback from a blogger today who seems to be a bit upset that Bloggers are concerned about finding Latoyia Figueroa. This in particular stood out in the post: The whiner-groaner-bloggers continue to try to make Laytoyia as prominent in the media's eye as Natalee Holloway: He goes on to analyze the motives of bloggers blogging on behalf of Latoyia, making the claim it seems that some bloggers are "racializing the issue." He goes on to reference a very good post which mentions how some bloggers are comparing the Natalee Halloway story to Latoyia and ridiculing the efforts of those concerned about Natalee. Fair enough. I have been guilty of this myself. But for anyone, as he does, to imagine that there is NOT a huge disparity on how cases involving "pretty white girls," as opposed to missing minority women, is simply ridiculous. Like the vast majority of people, I pray that Natalee will come home safely, or that her abductors will be brought to justice. But it is entirely appropriate to call the media on the carpet for how they handle these cases. I remember the Story of Pvt. Jessica Lynch, the cute little Southern White Girl who was captured in Iraq, and how she was all but made a National Hero, while a less attractive Black woman, was being held and abused at the same time, and received a fraction of the attention by the media. Likewise the Elizabeth Smart story dominated the news for over a year, at the same time minority children were going missing or being murdered or abused all across America. The post goes on to say: NPR has taken note the Bloggers are Blogging about Latoyia, but they've also chosen to display the more culturally-charming "white" photo of Latoyia... you can See the Photo, Hear the NPR Report HERE Listen to the NPR report, and then check out this NPR piece. I don't think any decent person would deny the Halloway family the support they have gotten for their missing daughter. But to stick our heads in the sand and pretend that racism does not exist, or worse, to turn around and attack those who are trying to get an equal level of public awareness for Latoyia is not only disengenious, but it is hateful. Oh and Dave... I don't think there is a Bloggers conspiracy to post white looking, or black looking, pictures. That assessment on your part probably speaks more to your own racial attitudes than any "Reality Check." When I wrote my first post, I simply placed the first picture I found of her. Trackback Pings

The most difficult aspect of this case is "what does this missing woman really look like?" Yes, there is a slight resemblance in the three fotos on my blog, but to me they could genuinely be three different women! NO RACISM INTENDED. Period. A chicken-hearted commenter emailed me that the picture I call "white" shows a woman with surgically-reduced lips. Who cares! What we all SHOULD know, is exactly what LF looked like the day she vanished. Look at Natalee Holloway photos, they're like rubber-stamp images. I know there are many of you out there who are like chameleons with different looks (or maybe you have little chameleon kids) so an accurate photograph is a MUST. Wherever LF is, I hope she is still alive and gets home safely. Posted by: Dave Lucas at July 30, 2005 07:39 PM Although this case has been bullied onto the national news to prove a point about race and media by political opportunists like Richard Cranium, it never was a case about a missing woman and is not national news. There is nothing particularly unusual about this case. She is an inner-city African-American/Latino woman, living a more than unconventional lifestyle in a high crime area, and now she's missing--big surprise. Furthermore, this story is hurtful to minorities because it has done nothing other than to reinfornce negative stereotypes: (1) LaToyia's father and other relatives are barely literate; (2) LaToyia's best friend said: "She coulda been snatched up by anybody, or one of her baby's fathas, or some guy she's messin wit" (rolling eyes); and (3) rather than save up more money, LaToyia and Baby Fatha No. 2 took their money and bought fried seafood rather than pay the $35 co-pay for prenatal care. The Natalee Holloway case is national news. She is a beautiful young woman, with a full scholarship to the University of Alabama, who disappears on what would otherwise be a dream vacation to an island resort with the lowest crime rate in the world. Big, big difference, in every respect. I hope LaToyia returns home safely, although I doubt it. In the end, however, we should not have to have our national news littered with this story. I assure you the end result will only cause more embarassment and humiliation, and it's clear that national news anchors are annoyed by having to cover this story because they too, of course, realize it's not national news. Wise up Cranium, this isn't about you and your outdated political agenda. Posted by: Mike at July 31, 2005 01:33 PM I am so sorry to hear that Latoyia was found murdered. God rest her soul. I pray that her daughter will remember the good times with her mother, and that she will never let people's ignorant statements cloud her memory or perception of her mother. I shudder in anger having just read what the person "Mike" wrote in regards to Latoyia's story. Hardly could any embarassment have ever come from this or any other story of a missing person. The last time I checked all of us bleed red, all of us breathe oxygen and all of us cry tears. The afore mentioned facts mean none are more important, none are more valuable and none are more worthy to be searched for by a nation of people who claim to be civilized. Please stop acting live an ignorant caveman and remember no one knows what the future holds, pray you never have to search for a loved one.
