Grupo Utopia Internationale S.A. was founded in August of 2001 by Maribell Anderson, David Anderson , Federico Esquivel, Paul Strasburger and M.J. Best. The company was originally founded as a vehicle for outsourced call center services. As the founder of the first bilingual call center in Costa Rica, David Anderson returned to Costa Rica in August of 2001 with a vision of founding a call center and a software development company. With an original investment by Alvaro Batalla, President of Summa Quantum Real Estate Group, the group set out to raise the funding needed to launch the call center.

An international group of small investors including company advisors Braden Garrett and Irfan Chughtai, and Doug Arroyo, Errol Rojas and Alonso Martinez all invested in the company both financially and with expertise. Doug acted as Utopia's first CFO, and Chugtai, Garrett, Arroyo and Rojas all provided valuable insight and advice during the companies early months of operation.

The events of September 11, 2001 had a dramatic impact on the world's financial markets, and resulted in a dramatic decline in investment in and out of Costa Rica. During the first three months of operation in Costa Rica, interest in the local investment community shifted to the software development side of the company and several additional investors from the United States joined the company with an interest in seeding development of Utopia's wireless software products. Paul Strasburger's years of experience in Hotel Management, and Alvaro Batalla's ownership of Hotel Tirol, one of Costa Rica's most exclusive hotel properties, fueled the development of the Wireless Hotel and Restaurant Application Grupo Utopia's first product, which is a joint venture with Procom S.A., Costa Rica's premier vendor of Hospitality Point of Sale Systems.

Grupo Utopia is parent to two companies, PDA Utopia S.A., which develops software for the wireless LAN and WAN market, and Utopia Professional Services S.A., which focuses on consulting and professional services, with a specific focus on IT consulting and Contact Center consulting and development services.
